Matchpoints strategy

This is my current topic of interest.

Why? Since Andre returned to Singapore, we have played 4 times at SCBA with the following results:

Friday 29 June: 66.18% 1st
Mon 2 Jul: 41% 2nd last
Fri 6 Jul: 45% 6th
Mon 9 Jul: 35% 3rd last (my all time MPs record low, amazed I didn’t get last, the bottom 2 were 34 and 32%)

Pretty weird stuff going on right?

This was of concern to us so we came up with some reasons.

Our first game that we played, when Andre was still jet-lagged from having landed back in Singapore just the previous day did well because nothing funny cropped up. We played our normal game, had a bit of luck and ended up with no outright bottoms, mostly average and average plus and a few tops, thus giving us 66%.

The games that followed, we faced system difficulties (due to the overcall structure, and some other minor details), some misunderstandings and most importantly, our strategy was wrong.

What do I mean? Andre made some doubles which I had no idea if he was planning to leave for penalties or for takeout into some other suit. With regards to the overcall structure, this was an anti-field system. Relatively speaking, I would think that we are one of the better pairs around, so playing anti-field is NOT the best. Coupled with misunderstandings due to the fact that we are but 4 months into this, you can see the recipe for disaster.

So my first question was, whether we should continue our 4 card majors/weak NT/overcall structure system. 4 card majors vs 5, I would think the former works better at MPs. Same goes for weak NT even though it is anti-field. We have had a couple of boards going 1NT-3NT with one suit completely open and opponents did not lead that suit. In fact, Andre even once claimed 10 tricks on the opening lead. With regards to the overcall structure, I would think that more proficient usage would allow us to have better results against the field. In fact, we have made some adjustments to certain sequences by further extending overcall structure ideas.

Of course, Andre’s still not used to matchpoints after playing so much bridge in UK. Matchpoints is an entirely different game from bridge. In bridge, you play to make the contract safely. In matchpoints, you risk going down for overtricks. I have been searching and have found lots of good advice on BBO.

Now to get my hands on matchpoint bridge by Hugh Kelsey.

Shall see how it goes tomorrow.

I was North playing in 3NT after East had overcalled in hearts. Winning the heart lead in hand, I cashed the clubs, KS to reach this position:

AJ
8
QT

Q9

J52

AJT42
K4

Q5

Now I led a low diamond towards the Queen, and this ended any chance for 11 tricks. If I had cashed Ace first and led towards the Queen, or played the ten instead of the queen, I would have gotten 11 tricks.

But perhaps the best line is to play on diamonds first. This wins 12 tricks: 2 spades, 3 diamonds, 6 clubs and a heart if East doesn’t take his 2 tricks.

BBO ITL Match: R-Patzers vs Treehuggers

Somehow I managed to find 4 players.

We won the first set 22-19 which translated to 16-14 in VPs, but lost the second 10-35 (8-22 in VPs). Not too bad I would say.

More to come later.

Friday Night Pairs at SCBA.

Andre and I won Friday Night Pairs with 66.18%.

Maybe this is what it means to be in “the zone”. I actually made quite a few bad mistakes, so if everything was perfect the score should perhaps been better.

This was our only bottom of the night:

I opened 2S and eventually ended up in 5SX. On the trump trick, Poon Hua (North) signalled for a diamond. Declarer cashed the Ace of Diamonds and I claimed 11 tricks.

An underlead of the diamond would have put me to the guess and probably down me by 1. In any case, imagine my amazement when Andre produced 6 spades in dummy for me!

5C shouldn’t have made but I allowed it to. In any case we still got 4.5 MPs out of 5 possible.

A team match

Last night, some of the juniors asked me for a team match in preparation for nationals today and tomorrow. I managed to grab Andre to play.

The 2nd board was rather interesting:

At my table, the bidding went:

West North East South
p 1
1NT p 2NT p
3 p 3NT

Let me explain the bidding. I was West. Now 1NT was for takeout, 2NT should show 5-5 in 2 unknown suits. We had no agreement after that, so 3C was pick a suit I hoped, but it turned out that Andre forgot about 2NT and thought it was invitational. (As 1NT could be passed out with a club stopper to play.)

I received the lead of the 2 of clubs.  I ducked the first round, South returning a spade. I inserted the T and it held. Now I cashed the King and received the news of the 4-1 split. I ducked a spade, South returning a diamond which dummy’s K won. Now I made the mistake of not counting, and ducked a club which I could not afford to do. Actually I was in BIG trouble now since I could not return to hand to my spades. However, South returned another diamond and I made 8 tricks. This was better than the other table which made only 7 tricks (which rightfully should be).

The rest of it was a scrap. We ended up in 3NT next after a weak 2H opener by me, other table reached 4H. Both games were good, but they somehow went down 1 doubled.  We passed out the next board, while opps in our position reached 3NT down 3. A 3NT vs 2NT game swing to us, and it was already 30-0.

Next 3 boards were bad, as Andre and I had a misunderstanding and let opps play in 2DX+1, then a game swing against us, as I thought Andre had wasted values and hence passed the invite, when he had a pointless 5 card suit! Then a partscore swing against us.

Last 3 boards saw a partscore vs passout swing to us, some misunderstanding (again!) which let them made game doubled, last board was a game swing to us.

Final score: 40-30, but it was marred by the fact that the opps at our table were having connection problems.

Not the best definitely, but it goes to show that our overcall structure notes are still not comprehensive enough. Time for a rethink/further extension?

(1): 3H was explained as 11+ HCP with support

South asked East a what 3H was and received the explanation above. The director was called to the table as soon as dummy was on the table. The players were advised to play on.

5H went down 2. South called the director and argued that she would have doubled if not for the given explanation of the 3H bid. The director ruled that no damage was done and hence, no adjustment.  He also informed NS of their right of appeal.

NS were considering appealing, but they had an argument as well. South argued that if North had bid 4S, she would have doubled 5H.  Even with the bidding, South’s line of argument was that “the double had already showed the hand” and North had the onus to double. Is this correct? I disagree on the following points:

1) This was MPs, so South should have doubled anyway if she thought 5H was going down. (And she should have done so in my opinion)

2) The double did NOT show the hand. South could easily have a rotten 12 count.

Perhaps a different TD would have allowed an adjustment (but difficult for a full adjustment to 5HX-2 I think), but I think NS would have stood a stronger case if North had bid 4S instead of 3S. Now South would be able to gauge more accurately that West did not have what he promised and doubled instead. Even if West had the correct points, South would be able to gauge that North had a unbalanced weak hand and  double 4S as well.

Any ideas on how to prove any damage if present?

SG Open Teams part 2, BBO ITL Match vs blitz

Went down last Sunday to kibitz the finals of Open Teams since the RJ team was withdrawn due to lack of J1s available.

Finals was between Open Team and Youth Team. No prizes for guessing who won. Particular interesting was 1 hand which CC Loo used Stayman with only 6(!) HCP opposite a 14-17 1NT and bid till game. 3NT made and YH Ng was flabbergasted beyond words. The kibitzers had a good laugh.

dscn5281-small.jpg

The consolations were more exciting. Going into the last round, Ladies team was leading with 187 VPs, followed by Mouse minus Moky with 184 and U21 team with 182. U21 had no say as they had a walkover in the last round, so they ended with 200 VPs. The top 2 teams faced off against each other in the last round though with the Ladies Team losing 20-37 for a 10 board match.

After that, went home for the BBO ITL match against blitz, a Canadian Team.

We lost badly, and got blitzed (forgive the pun), but truth is, we were unlucky. I couldn’t really find any plays/bids that could really be faulted.

Thanks to Yichen, Eric, Matthew, Emm, Andre and Xiaolu, especially the latter for being a sub when I couldn’t get Andre on MSN.

No match this weekend, as the team which we are supposed to play has been MIA all the while. Helen Aces has yet to get back to me on when we will play that match.

J1s are having a mini league on BBO as well. The first match was on Sunday night as well. Match analysis and results all posted on my bridge site.

2nd match for the J1s later. Hopefully it will be a good match to watch.

Hectic weekend!

In the end, I told our opps for BBO ITL last week that we couldn’t make it on saturday. Received no response by email and the weekend passed by.

Friday night: Went to SCBA thinking there was Good Food Good Bridge. However, the food part was cancelled. Eric wasn’t free, neither was Danen, and the J1s were happily paired up so Lilio asked me to partner this Brazilian guy called Caio Feilhaber. Mr Feilhaber’s roots are Austrian, as I found out, and his nephew plays soccer professionally for Hamburg SV. Wow.

We agreed on a simple 2/1 system and actually finished 6th out of 19 pairs, with 56.93%. Rather good result.

Saturday I was busy with my National Day Parade Marshalling duties. I was asked by Marco to go down to SCBA for Open Teams on Sunday as they did not even have 4 people. I agreed.

Imagine my shock when Sunday morning 0930 Emmaline called me to ask where I was! Marco had told me the wrong time, 1000. Thankfully I managed to grab a taxi. 15 minutes late and 1 VP deducted, but better than a walkover I guess.

First match was the second 8 boards against Mr Lai’s team, which we won overall 22-8. The rest were 14-16, 14-16, 13-17, giving us a 6th place in the qualifiers after garnering only 20 VPs in the first 3 matches against the top 3 teams in the section.

Will write up more in individual posts.

An inspired defence

It is a debate whether one should open 1H or 2H with these cards. I am aggressive and using Zar points, this is a 1H opener for me. North overcalled 2C, partner passed, South bid 3S, North signed off in 3NT. Partner leads the T of Hearts and dummy comes down:

AKQ632

Declarer plays J of Hearts from dummy. Do you take the trick?

I thought for a while, and ducked.

I figured Declarer had 2 spades at best, since he did not raise spades. Partner has J to the fourth in spades, and I figured, doubleton hearts. If so, partner could return another heart when he got in with spades and I would be able to run hearts.

Dummy won the heart trick, and Declarer played spades from the top. On the second spade, declarer found out the bad break. Eventually, partner got in and led back another heart for the contract to go down 2. This was a joint top board and so garnered my pair 9.5 out of 10 MPs on Friday night at SCBA.

Interestingly enough, I saw a variety of contracts on the traveller.

BBO ITL Match 2: vs Kardili

Maybe it was a bad thing that I was stressed out trying to find another pair before the match.

One thing I have to say though: I think the J1s did well.

Will add the link to the match package later.
